Anatomic Couture

It all begins with life drawing. Evolving from years of immersive exploration of the figure through drawing, painting & sculpture. To understand the human body better, this observation grew deeper, into the study of Anatomy and what’s beneath the flesh that we see. Inspired by this, the aim was to make a series of garments that visually reveal the layers of the body, show the unseen & animate anatomy! Influenced by old medical encyclopaedia where illustrations unfold to reveal the hidden intricacies of the body. Hence, the introduction of the three protagonists- Skin, Muscles & Skeleton.

The Skin ensemble, a homage to the graceful forms of classical sculpture, contrasted with bodybuilders doing ballet. This design consists of a bodice sculpted using Biomaterials and an inflatable latex arm.

Behind reveals the Muscles, which illustrate the muscle fibre direction and merges 3D printing with material. When turned to the back, the fibres turn raw, with naturally dyed (madder) yarn.

Finally, the Skeleton embodies the bones, in which illuminate in the form of an X-Ray, using electronics and hand pleated organza to distribute the light. In order to bring these pieces to life, interactive elements are incorporated, as well as combining traditional techniques with modern technology.

Made with the intention to be worn and performed in, the final piece brings these pieces ‘to life’ in the form of a film. Collaborating with dancers and musicians to create a tailored and unique performance.‘Insides turned outside to cover the outside with insides’ – Henry Whysall
